Aachen eats and drinks with history. Hardly any city links its cuisine as closely to its own identity as the imperial city – from the world-famous Printe to dishes that are barely known outside the region. Anyone who really wants to taste Aachen should look beyond the main tourist street.

Printen – More Than Just Gingerbread
Aachen Printe is EU-protected and indispensable in any Aachen kitchen. Nobis Printen has been baking according to a family recipe since 1858, while Printen Klein has specialised exclusively in this one pastry. The legendary side of the Printe also has its place: the Printe legend tells its own unique origin story.
Insider Tips That Hardly Anyone Knows
The Öcher Reisfladen and the Streuselbrötchen are found almost only in and around Aachen – genuine local rarities that even many tourists miss. Anyone who likes savoury food should try Aachen Sauerbraten with its characteristic Printe sauce – a dish that exists only here in this form.
It tastes best at the Postwagen Zum Ratskeller on the market square, where the Aachen speciality Himmel & Ääd is also on the menu.

Coffee, Café and More
Café Van den Daele is Aachen’s oldest café – since 1890 combining Belgian pâtisserie and Printe tradition under one roof. For hearty Italian food in the city centre, Restaurant Macaroni is worth a visit; for a rustic evening, try the Domkeller right next to the cathedral.
