Aachen City Hall is undoubtedly one of the most important buildings in the city. It is located in the heart of the old town and is an important stop along the “Route Charlemagne”, which visits places associated with Charlemagne and European history. The historic rooms of the town hall are open to the public and offer a variety of attractions. A special highlight is the 3D computer simulation of Charlemagne’s palace complex at the beginning of the tour. Here you can transport yourself back to the time of Charlemagne and gain an impression of the size and splendor of the palace.

Other interesting exhibits in the Town Hall include photos and films commemorating World War II, as well as an interactive listening bench and a photo album. In the adjacent Red Hall, the theme is “Peace,” and in the Coronation Hall, visitors can view copies of the medieval imperial crown and other insignia of power. Another highlight of the Town Hall is the painting “The Battle of Cordoba” by Rethel from 1849/50, which gives an impression of the image of Charles.
Importance of peace
The Coronation Hall is also the place where the International Charlemagne Prize is awarded. This prize has been awarded annually since 1950 and honors personalities who have worked for European unification and peace in Europe. It is an important prize that underlines the importance of Europe as a community and the importance of cooperation and peace in today’s world
